On 16 April 2021 took place the first webinar entitled “Meso-microscale coupling for wind resource assessment in complex terrain: a critical discussion from the modelling, HPC and industrial point of view” within the frame of the ENERXICO project, a Europe-Mexico collaboration that aims to develop performance simulation tools that require exascale HPC and data intensive algorithms for different energy sources, among them wind energy production. Nearly 80 people attended the webinar which focused on wind energy optimisation. The main goal of these webinars is to give participants a rounded view of the research lines of ENERXICO in wind energy, combustion, and oil & gas fields.
The webinar comprised a first section with three panellists presenting state-of-the-art results on this topic. Oriol Lehmkuhl, Senior Researcher from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, was the first speaker and his talk was about the experience of ENERXICO in the coupling of meso-microscale models by means of forcing terms. Then it was the turn of Andrea N. Hahmann, Senior Researcher Scientists from the Technical University of Denmark, with the presentation “Off-line mesoscale-microscale coupling for wind energy resources using a simple approach”. Finally, Dalibor Cavar, Senior Scientist also from the Technical University of Denmark, gave a talk about the tendencies approach of meso to micro dynamic offline coupling.
Later there was a roundtable discussion, focusing on the importance and future of an application like this for the industry. The discussion spun around current industry best practices for wind modelling, the potential impact of HPC use in modelling accuracy, or the future of wind modelling within the new scenario of constant and quick renewable energy growth. Oriol Lehmkuhl, Andrea N. Hahmann and Dalibor Cavar participated in the discussion along with Javier Sanz, Senior Data Scientist from Siemens Gamesa, and Circe Triviño, Head of Section Energy&Analytics Iberia & Lantinamerica from DNV GL.
