On 13 July 2021 took place the last webinar within the framework of ENERXICO, a Europe-Mexico collaboration that aims to develop performance simulation tools that require exascale HPC and data intensive algorithms for different energy areas, among them combustion. The event was linked to the activities of the project about the development of computational methods for the study of high pressure spray flames of sustainable fuels. More than 50 people attended.
The webinar, chaired by José M. Garcia-Oliver, Professor at CMT-Motores Térmicos, Universitat Politècnica de València, comparised a first part with three key note speakers presenting results on this topic. Daniel Mira, Postdoc Researcher at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, was the first speaker and his talk focused on large-eddy simulations of high pressure spray flames at ECN Spray A conditions. After him, Muhsin Ameen, Research Scientist from the Center for Transportation Research at Argonne National Laboratories gave the talk “Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and High-Fidelity Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) for Improved Prediction of In-Cylinder Flow and Combustion Processes”. Finally, Kar Mun Pang, Research Engineer at MAN Energy Solutions, based his presentation on dual fuel combustion modelling under large two-stroke marine engine-like conditions.
After the three presentations, there was a roundtable discussion focused on the challenges and opportunities about the modelling of these systems and the perspectives of the renewable fuels for mobility applications. It was moderated by Daniel Mira and Muhsin Ameen participated in the discussion along with José M. Garcia-Oliver, Professor at CMT-Motores Térmicos, Universitat Politècnica de València, Gilles Hardy, Senior Thermodynamic Engineer at FPt Motorenforschung and Federico Millo, Professor at Politecnico di Torino.
